Cerro Gordo County Recorder (AnnMarie Legler): Recorded Discharges and the County’s Fee Schedule

The Cerro Gordo County Recorder (AnnMarie Legler, 220 N. Washington Ave., Mason City; 641-421-3056, 641-421-3054, [email protected], weekdays 8:00 to 4:30) records military service discharges under the State's rules - free to the veteran, confidential under Iowa Code 331.608(6) - and the office's own recording-fee schedule prices conveyances and non-conveyances by page and names no discharge line; the county's military exemption requires the DD-214 to be recorded in Cerro Gordo County.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The rules are the State's; see the Iowa entries on discharge recording and on the confidentiality of the recorded discharge (Iowa Code 331.608(6)). The county's own pages: The office. "Recorder, Location: 220 N. Washington Ave., Mason City, IA 50401. Contact Information: 641-421-3056, [email protected]. Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m." The team: "AnnMarie Legler, Recorder, 641-421-3054; Lindsey Hansen, Vital Records and DNR Deputy; Amy Smalley, Real Estate Deputy." The office's services run from vital records and marriage applications through recording information, document search, document formatting standards, index books, Iowa Land Records and recorder forms. The fee schedule. The Recorder's recording-fees page prices the work by page - "Conveyance Documents ... $7.00 1st page, plus $5.00 for each additional page" and "Non-Conveyance Documents ... (Mortgages, Releases, Assignments, Easements, etc) $7.00 1st page, plus $5.00 for each additional page" - and names no discharge line at all: the recorded military discharge takes no fee under the State's rules, and the schedule's silence is the county's own statement of it. Why it matters here. The county's Veteran Affairs pages make the recording a gate on the county's own benefits: "Please note, in order to qualify for the exemption, you must have your DD-214 recorded in Cerro Gordo County" (the military exemption through the county), and the office's veteran-designation service reads the member-4 DD214 to complete Iowa DOT form 432035. A Cerro Gordo veteran's DD-214 goes to this office, and the veteran's copies come back free under the statute.
