Cayuga County (New York) veterans’ property tax exemptions

Cayuga County's own veterans exemption pages set the route - apply to your local town assessor by March 1 with the DD-214 and licences, on the State's RP-458-a or RP-458-b forms - and print the county's own municipal level table: the county grants the alternative veterans exemption at Level B (wartime 15% or $9,000, combat 25% or $15,000, disability up to $30,000), Auburn at Level A, and the Cold War exemption at $15,000 or 15% where adopted.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The route. The county's Real Property Tax Exemptions page: "Veterans who are honorably discharged from active duty my apply for an exemption for Real Property Tax on their primary residence with the LOCAL TOWN ASSESSOR. Completed applications and photocopies of DD-214, driver's licenses of all owners (& Veteran) plus disability rating if any should be submitted by MARCH 1st to the Town Assessor." It links the Alternative Veterans Exemption Application (the State's RP-458-a) for wartime service and the Cold War Veterans Application (RP-458-b) for peacetime, and the county's own page adds the eligibility notes: proof of discharge under honorable conditions with times and places of active duty (usually the DD-214) attached; an unremarried surviving spouse may apply; a veteran who moves must re-apply at the new residence; and a service-connected disability rating scales the additional exemption. The Veterans' Service Agency "should be of assistance in obtaining the paperwork if the veteran has misplaced their original documents". The county's levels. The county's own veterans page (509/Veterans) prints the level table each taxing jurisdiction applies: Cayuga County Level B - combat veteran 25% or $15,000 max, wartime veteran 15% or $9,000 max, disability up to $30,000; the City of Auburn Level A - combat 25% or $20,000, wartime 15% or $12,000, disability up to $40,000; and the towns from Aurelius to Victory at Levels A through D as the page lists, with the Cold War exemption adopted in the county, the city and the towns of Conquest, Moravia, Niles, Owasco, Scipio, Springport, Summerhill, Throop and Venice. Level D - combat 25% or $25,000, wartime 15% or $15,000, disability up to $50,000 - is the highest on the table. The law. Real Property Tax Law 458-A (alternative veterans) and 458-B (Cold War); see the New York entries for the Statewide rules. Questions go to the local assessor - the county's Assessor Contact Information list is linked from its page - or to the Veterans' Service Agency, (315) 253-1281.
