Carbon County (Pennsylvania) Burial Allowance and Headstone Claims

Carbon County Veterans Affairs takes the county's $100 burial allowance for a veteran who lived in the county, a $100 allowance for a veteran's widow, and claims for setting a federal headstone; its November 2025 forms still cite the repealed 1929 County Code, and the law is now 16 Pa.C.S. Chapter 155. Apply within a year of the death (570-325-3986).

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The duty is the State's: every county of the third to eighth class pays at least $75 toward the funeral of a serviceperson who lived there and of a spouse who has not remarried, and pays the actual cost of a base or lettering for a federal headstone (16 Pa.C.S. 15509, 15510 and 15513; see the Pennsylvania entry on county burial and grave benefits). Claims other than for a death in service must be made within one year. Carbon County's forms. The "Carbon County Application for Burial Allowance" asks the applicant to confirm "THIS FORM IS FOR THE COUNTY ALLOWANCE OF $100.00 TOWARD BURIAL", with the funeral director's affidavit of the cost and itemized bill; it also asks whether the family was told of the free federal bronze headstone and received a flag and flag holder for the grave. The "Claim for Burial Expenses of a Deceased Service Man's Widow" is "in the amount of $100.00". The "Application for Headstone Expense" authorizes a contractor to inscribe or install a federal headstone and certify the cost; it names no county cap, and section 15513 says actual cost. Out of date. All three forms (revised November 2025) cite "Section 424 & 426 of the General Code of 1929" or "Section 424 of the General County Code of 1929", which 16 Pa.C.S. Chapter 155 replaced; the forms ask whether the discharge was honourable. The entitlement is the statute's, so a family should apply on the forms and rely on the statute. Where.
