Canadian County Assessor: Veteran's Exemption

The Canadian County Assessor's veteran's exemption page takes the State's full fair cash value homestead exemption for a 100% permanent service-connected veteran or their surviving spouse: honorable discharge, Oklahoma residence, VA certification, homestead qualification, the original raised-seal VA letter and ID, with Form 998; once granted it continues until qualifications change, and a move needs a new application, applied for any time of year.

Also called: property tax, assessor, Article X, section 8E, Form 998, raised seal, El Reno, Yukon, Mustang.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's; see the Oklahoma entries. Article X, section 8E exempts the full fair cash value of the homestead of a 100% permanently disabled veteran. In Canadian County the Assessor administers it from 200 N Choctaw Avenue, El Reno, OK 73036, phone (405) 295-6331, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Assessor is Matt Wehmuller. What the county says. "100% disabled veterans or their surviving spouse may obtain an exemption from the full amount of the fair cash value of the homestead (exemption from property tax for the homestead property). To qualify, the following requirements must be met: The veteran must have an honorable discharge from a branch of the Armed Forces or the Oklahoma National Guard. The veteran must be a resident of the state of Oklahoma. The veteran must have a 100% permanent disability. The disability must have been sustained through military action or accident, or result from a disease contracted while in active service. The disability must be certified by the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The veteran must qualify for Homestead Exemption on the property for which tax-exempt status is being requested." How. "Once you receive the disabled veterans exemption, you do not have to apply again unless your qualifications change. If you move to a new home, you will have to fill out a new application. Please bring the original letter with the raised seal from the Department of Veterans Affairs and identification to our office to apply for the exemption. You may apply at any time throughout the year." The page links the Tax Commission's Form 998. Where the page is narrower than the law. Like Tulsa's, it does not mention the household personal property exemption of section 8D or the line-of-duty spouse exemption of section 8F, and it is silent on a veteran paid at the 100% rate through unemployability; the Oklahoma entries and the State's Form 998 cover both.
