Campbell County Vehicle License Fee Exemptions for Active Duty, Decorated and Disabled Veterans, and Surviving Spouses
No Campbell County vehicle license fee on a vehicle of an active-duty member, Guard and reserve included, or on one vehicle of a holder of Disabled Veteran, prisoner of war, Purple Heart, or Medal of Honor plates, or of the holder’s unremarried surviving spouse. Guard plate holders pay half.
Also called: license fee, registration fee, decal, active duty, National Guard, DV plates, POW, Purple Heart, Medal of Honor, surviving spouse.
Campbell County charges an annual license fee on vehicles garaged in the county outside the towns of Altavista and Brookneal. Chapter 15 of the county code exempts:
Any vehicle owned or leased, even in part, by "a member of the armed services of the United States on active duty", a term that "includes active duty service with the regular Armed Forces of the United States or the National Guard or other reserve component" (section 15-11(C)).
One vehicle of a veteran with Disabled Veteran plates and the DMV disabled veteran exemption, or of that veteran's unremarried surviving spouse (section 15-13(B)).
One vehicle of a Medal of Honor recipient or of a Purple Heart recipient with those plates, or of the recipient's unremarried surviving spouse (section 15-13(E)).
One car or pickup of a former prisoner of war with the prisoner of war plates, or of the unremarried surviving spouse of someone eligible for them (section 15-13(I)).
Section 15-13(J) halves the fee for a National Guard member with the state's Guard plates. The state requires only the Disabled Veteran waiver, and only for the veteran (section 46.2-755(B)); the surviving spouse, Purple Heart, Medal of Honor, prisoner of war, active-duty, and Guard provisions are Campbell's own. Section 15-11(C) also gives a member back from service overseas, and an accompanying spouse or dependent, 90 days to license the vehicle. None of this is described on the county's tax pages, so ask the Commissioner of the Revenue in Rustburg and cite the section.
