What it pays. The county's 2026-2027 Assistance Application offers grocery assistance (SNAP-approved items only, chosen from a list), rent or mortgage assistance, utilities assistance, fuel, vehicle repair and miscellaneous assistance. The county's announcements describe the "Caldwell County Vets First Grant" as financial support "for hardships such as past due utility payments, rent, mortgages, grocery assistance, gas, car payments and car repairs." A rental request needs the rental agreement, and a vehicle repair an invoice from a licensed mechanic. Who qualifies, by the application. The applicant is the veteran or the veteran's spouse, living in Caldwell County. The authorizations read: "I understand that in order to receive assistance, my monthly liquid resources cannot exceed $12,500 and my utility statement must be a past due amount or final notice"; "the Discharge Characterization of Service: Honorable, General Under Honorable Conditions, Other Than Honorable Conditions and Uncharacterized shall be used as one of the criteria if this grant funding is awarded"; assistance is "contingent on a completed application, submission of required documentation, resource eligibility, and available funds"; and "completed applications will be worked in the order they are received." What to bring (the mandatory documentation list). A valid photo ID (or expired less than a year); proof of residency; proof of service - a driver's licence or ID with the "VETERAN" designation, a Veteran Identification Card or VHIC, or a DD-214 or NGB-22 showing the character of discharge; 30 days of full bank statements for every account in any beneficiary's name; and a signed, dated letter of need. "Grant funding is based on household size": a spouse's documents and marriage licence, children's birth certificates (stepchildren count through the spouse), and for children 18 to 22 in college their documents and proof of enrollment raise the household figure. The money. The Commissioners Court approved applying for the FY2027 General Assistance grant on November 25, 2025 and, on September 10, 2026, accepted "an award from Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans' Assistance General Assistance - Financial Assistance Grant for FY 2027 in the amount of $100,000.00"; the county's recap calls it the grant's "second consecutive year". The FY2026-27 budget's grants fund shows the FY2026 lines - "TVC GENERAL ASSISTANCE" $100,000 ($65,279.14 spent at the worksheet) and "TVC HOUSING TEXAS HEROES" $150,000 ($149,170.03 spent) - and $100,000 of general assistance for FY2027. The year's ratified payments include veterans housing and home-renovation work (Home Renovations LLC $2,475, February 12, 2026; Dustin Duron, "Veterans Housing Projects", $13,937, May 28, 2026; TX ADA Home Remodeling, August 2026), utilities (City of Lockhart $1,606.82, July 9, 2026), groceries, a mortgage payment and vehicle assistance (Performance Auto $806.80, October 8, 2026). On October 22, 2026 the Court took up an application for the FY2028 grant. How to apply. Download the application from the county's Veterans page, or call 512-398-6492 or email [email protected]. The grant is the TVC's; see the Texas entry for the Fund for Veterans' Assistance.
