The exemption is the State's; see the California entry on the disabled veterans' property tax exemption for the amounts ($180,671 off the assessed value for the January 1, 2026 lien date, or $271,009 at the income limit, with SB 296's new calculation from the January 1, 2027 lien date) and who qualifies. What the county adds is the route, read from the Assessor's own pages.
The deadline. The Assessor's FAQ item "Important Dates to Remember": "February 15 - Last day to file exemption claims to receive 100% exemption. (Homeowners', Church, Religious, Welfare, Museum, Cemetery, Historical Aircraft, Veterans', and Blind or Disabled Veterans')." The 100% exemption is the full-year one; a claim filed after February 15 gets a partial-year exemption for the balance of the fiscal year.
The forms. The Assessor's Forms & Publications page: "Most of the forms that we use are designed by the State Board of Equalization and used by all 58 counties. In order to save taxpayer money, the California County Assessors developed a way for you to access all of those forms easily. Simply click on the link below, click on the outline of Calaveras County in the state map when the window opens and choose the form that you want to complete." - the link being capropeforms.org, where the disabled veterans' exemption claim (BOE-261) and its instructions live.
