The Butte County Veterans Service Office is the county veterans service office California counties run under Military and Veterans Code section 970; see the California entry. The county says it "is an office established by the Butte County Board of Supervisors to assist veterans, their dependents and survivors, and the general public in obtaining benefits from federal, state, and local agencies administering programs for veterans", and "We are a county agency and not the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)." It sits in the Department of Employment and Social Services. What it does. Comprehensive benefit counselling; claim preparation, submission and tracking; help requesting discharge documents; the California College Tuition Fee Waiver; referral for employment, public assistance, VA medical care, education and housing; and the "Butte County Veteran ID Card Program", which no county page describes further, so a veteran should ask the office. Its representatives handle compensation claims, VA pensions, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, aid and attendance, vocational rehabilitation, VA and CalVet home loans, GI Bill benefits, life insurance, military records and decorations, discharge upgrades and record corrections, and burial benefits. Claim fraud. The office warns that since the 2022 PACT Act fraudsters have charged upfront fees to file claims, and urges veterans to file "free of charge through the Butte County Veterans Service Office." What to bring. The DD-214, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, dependants' birth certificates, Social Security documents and any death certificates. When and where. 765 East Avenue, Suite 200, Chico, CA 95926; phone 530-552-6608, fax 530-895-6508. Appointments Monday to Friday, 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 4 p.m.; walk-ins Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 4 p.m.; closed daily for lunch. The office joins the county's Operation Green Light each November (the Board's resolution for November 2025 was adopted on November 18, 2025) and helps run the Butte County Veterans Stand Down in Chico.
