Butte County Assessor: Disabled Veterans' Exemption

The Butte County Assessor takes the State exemption for a veteran rated 100% or paid at 100% for unemployability, blind in both eyes or without the use of more than one limb, and for qualifying unmarried surviving spouses; a late claim for the year may be filed until December 10. Its pages give no amounts and do not mention the 2027 change.

Also called: property tax, assessor, BOE-261-G, disabled veterans exemption, Oroville, Chico, December 10, unemployability.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's; the California entry gives the amounts, the income limit and Senate Bill 296's larger exemption from the January 1, 2027 lien date. What the Assessor says. "You may apply for the Disabled Veteran's Exemption if you are a totally disabled veteran (service related 100% or 100% unemployable), or are blind in both eyes or have lost the use of more than one limb as a result of injury or disease during military service." An unmarried surviving spouse may apply if the veteran was receiving the exemption or would have qualified, and so may the unmarried surviving spouse of a veteran who died on active duty of a service-connected injury or disease. That matches Revenue and Taxation Code section 205.5, unemployability included. When. The Assessor's deadlines page lists December 10 as the "Last day to pay first installment of secured property taxes and to file for late homeowner's and disabled veteran's exemptions"; the full exemption needs the claim by the State deadline in the California entry. What it leaves out. The pages give no dollar amounts (for 2026, $180,671, or $271,009 under an $81,131 household income) and do not mention section 205.5.1, which from the 2027 lien date exempts half of the first $1,000,000 of value, or all of it under the income limit. The Assessor is at 25 County Center Drive, Oroville.
