Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Butler County Veterans Service Commission is the county's commission under Revised Code chapter 5901; see the Ohio entry on county veterans service commissions. Its office is in the Government Services Center, Hamilton (513-887-3600 or 513-425-8600). What it pays. Temporary help on a need basis with housing, utilities, food and hygiene items, basic living expenses, transportation, car repairs, clothing and day care. Anyone approved can also get budget counselling from LifeSpan. The commission weighs income from work and from other public benefits, basic living expenses and total assets, and every applicant has a face-to-face interview. Who qualifies. The financial assistance page states the statute's test fairly: at least one day of active duty outside training, a discharge under honorable conditions, Butler County residence and a definite financial need, for a veteran or member of the armed forces or the spouse, surviving spouse, dependent parent, minor child or ward of either (Revised Code 5901.01(B) and 5901.08). It adds two conditions of its own. It requires an Ohio state ID or driver's licence, which the statute does not; its July 2026 minutes say that requirement is under review. And its separate eligibility page lists an "Honorable character discharge", a "Spouse/dependent child of honorably discharged veterans" and a "Parent receiving VA benefits". For assistance the statute accepts a general discharge and a dependent parent with no VA award, so a family turned away on those grounds should cite 5901.08. The eligibility page also says a reservist or Guard member "may be eligible" after completing a six-year contract; the statute requires active duty for a purpose other than training, or a service-connected disability from training duty, so ask how the commission applies that rule. Rides. The commission pays the Butler County Regional Transit Authority, under a contract from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2029, to carry veterans, and in February 2026 its board took up rides to the commission's own appointments and to its dental clinic.
