Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Ohio requires each county veterans service commission to bury or cremate a veteran, or a veteran's parent, spouse or surviving spouse, who died without the means to pay, with the county paying up to $1,000 (Revised Code 5901.25 to 5901.27; see the Ohio entry). How Butler County runs it. The commission pays up to $1,000 where the deceased was indigent, could not afford the burial, or where paying would cause financial hardship, and it names the right family members: the veteran, the veteran's parent, spouse or surviving spouse. Whoever is handling the final affairs makes an appointment and brings the DD-214, proof of relationship if the deceased was not the veteran, the death certificate and an itemised funeral invoice. The commission's own limit. The funeral home's final bill, before any payments, must not exceed $5,000 to be considered. Section 5901.26 caps only the county's share, at $1,000, and leaves the rest to the family or friends; a family whose funeral will cost more should ask before signing, citing the statute.
