The office. The Burt County Veterans Service Office is on the first floor of the courthouse, 111 North 13th Street, Suite 4, Tekamah, NE 68061, phone (402) 374-2920, [email protected], open Wednesday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (the same hours in the State's directory, updated October 26, 2026). The Veterans Service Officer is Penny Warren, whom the Board's minutes call the "part time Burt County VSO". The office helps veterans and dependents with information on VA benefits, with applications and supporting documents, and with eligibility for VA medical centre treatment. The page lists the 988 crisis line, the VA's benefits and emergency-care notification numbers, and numbers for the Omaha VA Medical Center and the VA at Dakota Dunes, and says the County Clerk records a DD-214 once it is brought in. Homestead certification. The Assessor's homestead FAQ, under "How do I qualify as a Disabled Veteran or their Widow?", lists the exemptions for a veteran totally disabled by a non-service-connected illness or accident, each "(annual certification required)", and sends the veteran to the Veterans Service Office first for a physician's form and the office's certification. The application under section 77-3508 is annual, but 77-3508(1)(c) says the medical certification need not be repeated when the condition has not changed, though the assessor may ask for it again (see the Nebraska entries). The Board's year. On October 28, 2025 the Board signed the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs' memorandum for the VetraSpec claims software for January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028. On December 26, 2025 it denied the Veterans Service Board's request that the county reimburse Ms. Warren for her personal cell phone, which the board said 20% of her job requires. On July 8, 2026 it re-appointed Roger Kirschenman as the Decatur member of the Veterans Service Committee for five years, and it set the officer's wage at $30.18 an hour in July 2026 and from January 2027 at 60% of an elected official's wage, the Treasurer's. Hiring. The county's Employment page says "Burt County, Nebraska, is an Equal Opportunity Employer and Veterans Preference Employer" (the preference is the State's; see the Nebraska entries). The money. The filed 2025-2026 budget gives the office (0100-803 Vets) $45,764.68, against $40,663.66 spent in 2024-2025, including $1,700.00 for grave markers ($795.89 spent in 2024-2025).
