Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Burlington grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessors’ Exemption Tax Relief Chart for fiscal 2027 prints $800 under clause 22 (a 10 percent disability or a Purple Heart), $1,500 under 22A, $2,000 under 22E and 100 per cent under 22D, and lists 22F for a paraplegic due to war injury without a relief amount. Each printed amount is the statutory amount doubled. The same chart doubles the non-veteran clauses too ($1,000 under 37A and $350 under 17D), which is what section 5C½ at 100 per cent produces and clause 22J does not; the chart names no option, and no town meeting vote was found in the town’s online records, so ask the assessors to confirm. The chart’s applications must be filed by April 1 and are granted for one year. The Veteran Services page names no officer and gives 781-270-1959, where the EOVS directory lists Christopher Hanafin at Town Hall, 29 Center Street (781-270-1960). Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Burlington Veteran Services: Christopher Hanafin (EOVS directory). Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

GateRule
A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
