Buffalo County Veterans Aid: The Committee’s Monthly Decisions

Buffalo County’s Veterans Service Committee decides each county aid application in open session every month and records the amount; in July 2026 it added urgent mental health treatment to the aid it will pay, and its proposed 2026-2027 budget sets $44,399.79 for aid while the county levied no veterans’ aid tax for the year.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

How it works here. Applications go through the Veteran Service Office, and the officer or office manager presents each one to the Veterans Service Committee at its monthly meeting, where a motion approves, adjusts or disapproves it; the minutes record the amount and the veteran's initials. The county's page describes the fund as "a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency and there are no other resources available", for food, shelter, clothing, funeral, medical, dental and surgical items, and says the veteran "must demonstrate an 'inability' to meet the obligation to pay these bills, via an application." The page also asks for an honorable discharge and service "during one of the defined 'wartime eras'", tests that section 80-102 no longer imposes: LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) struck the wartime requirement, and the statute accepts honorable or general (under honorable conditions) service, with one year in Nebraska and six months in the county (see the Nebraska entry on the county fund). The year's decisions. December 9, 2025: $2,153.60 for mortgage, food and utilities, plus $1,491.78 for the following month's mortgage once the veteran submitted a budget plan, and $1,250.00 for rent and food. July 14, 2026: $525 for mental health care. September 8, 2026: one application disapproved. October 13, 2026: $2,370.83. The minutes record no other aid decision from October 2025 through October 2026. On October 14, 2025 the officer told the committee that applications were coming back incomplete and arriving long after the most useful moment, and urged veterans to ask "after the first notice of financial struggles vs. months into financial struggle" so the committee can help before the trouble becomes irreversible. The limits and the budget. On July 14, 2026 the committee re-approved the county aid limits it had passed on April 19, 2017 and June 11, 2024 and, on the officer's proposal, approved "the establishment for County Veteran's Aid for Urgent Mental Health Treatment". On August 11, 2026 the officer proposed reducing the 2026-2027 aid budget from $45,000 to $35,000, telling the committee that over ten years the office had awarded an average of $19,740 a year and never more than $28,293, and that the purpose was "to utilize the funds entrusted to us by the citizens of Buffalo County responsibly and efficiently"; the minutes then record a unanimous motion "to approve the current limits for County Veteran's Aid as drafted". The county's proposed 2026-2027 budget (created September 8, 2026) carries $44,399.79 for Veterans Aid Costs in the County Veterans Relief fund, against $27,257.54 spent in 2024-2025. The Board's 2025-2026 levy resolution (Resolution 2025-64) set a Veteran's Aid levy of 0.000314; its 2026-2027 resolution (Resolution 2026-45, October 13, 2026) lists only the general and bond levies, so the fund draws no property tax this year and runs on its balance.
