The Bucks County Court of Common Pleas runs a Veterans Treatment Court for county residents with PTSD, brain injury, military sexual trauma or a mental health or substance use problem, with veteran mentors and VA on the team. It takes honorable and general discharges, and other than honorable case by case; the county funds transport and sober housing for participants.
The Veterans Treatment Court brings together the Court of Common Pleas, the District Attorney, the Public Defender, Adult Probation, the county Department of Veterans Affairs, veteran mentors and VA, to connect veterans with treatment and find a disposition that weighs the treatment need against the seriousness of the offence.
Who it takes. A Bucks County resident, for the whole programme, who is a veteran or a serving member, including the Guard and Reserves, able to get a DD-214, and medically diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, military sexual trauma, or a psychological or substance use problem needing treatment. The discharge must be honorable or general; an other than honorable discharge is considered case by case. A veteran with co-occurring disorders may be sent to the Recovery or Wellness Court, and a diagnosis that prevents taking part is a bar.
How it works. Anyone can refer; applications go to the coordinator with a certified DD-214 and proof of the diagnosis. The District Attorney reviews the charges and record and may consult the officer and victims. VA's Veterans Justice Outreach social worker assesses VA eligibility and needs and gives the team a written treatment plan within 20 days. Participation is voluntary, and bail conditions carry supervision while the application is considered. Each participant can be paired with a volunteer veteran mentor.
County money. For 2026 the commissioners funded transport and housing for participants from opioid settlement money ($25,000 through the Department of Veterans Affairs) and a transport contract for Veterans Court participants.
Contact: 215-348-6344, or the Veterans Court email on the court's page. Veterans who would like to mentor must commit to a year and have no conviction in the last three years.
