Bucks County: Applying for the State's Disabled Veterans Real Estate Tax Exemption

Bucks County's Department of Veterans Affairs takes applications for Pennsylvania's full real estate tax exemption. Its page asks for a 100% permanent and total rating, leaving out unemployability, blindness, paraplegia and the loss of two limbs, and misprints the income figure as $114,647; the State figure is $114,637.

Also called: property tax, real estate tax exemption, RETX, 51 Pa.C.S. 8902, $114,637, $114,647, financial need, surviving spouse.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's; see the Pennsylvania entry. It removes all real estate tax on the home, and the State Veterans' Commission decides need. In Bucks County the application goes through the Department of Veterans Affairs (215-345-3307), on the State's form. What the page gets right. The dwelling must be owned by the veteran alone or with a spouse and lived in as the principal home; the veteran must have served honorably in a period of war; income at or below the presumption figure is presumed to show need and income above it can still qualify on a showing of need; and the unmarried surviving spouse can carry the exemption on. Where it narrows the statute. The disability test. The page asks for "a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability rating". 51 Pa.C.S. 8902(a)(2) also opens the exemption to a wartime veteran who because of service is blind, paraplegic or has lost two or more limbs, at any rating, and to one whose disability VA has declared "total", which takes in individual unemployability. The State's own form asks about those conditions. The figure. The page twice gives the presumption of need as $114,647. The State's January 2025 form gives $114,637, effective January 1, 2025.
