Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Real Property Tax Law 458-a(11) lets a county fully exempt the primary residence of a seriously disabled veteran; see the New York entries on the alternative veterans exemption. Broome County's Legislature has before it, on its October 22, 2026 agenda, a resolution "adopting Local Law Intro 4 of 2026 entitled: 'A Local Law Authorizing a Full Property Tax Exemption for Certain 100% Permanent and Total Service-Disabled Veterans Pursuant to New York State Real Property Tax Law, Section 458-a(11)'". What it would do. "The primary residence of any seriously disabled veteran meeting the eligibility requirements set forth in Section 458-a(11) of the Real Property Tax Law shall be fully exempt from taxation for County purposes, together with any special district charges, assessments, and special ad valorem levies to the extent authorized by such section." The town and city assessors would administer it on the State's forms. It covers only the County's share of the tax bill; towns, cities, villages and school districts must each adopt their own. Until it passes. The alternative veterans exemption's disability part still applies to the County tax at the County's levels, which the county does not publish; the town assessor has them. File by the taxable status date, usually March 1.
