Bridgewater Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

Bridgewater’s veterans page describes the wartime, active-duty, disabled, additional and dwelling programs and prints the additional exemption’s income limits of $56,500 married and $46,300 single; OLR’s survey recorded the 12-81g(b) three-times option.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Bridgewater.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor’s Veterans page requires the DD-214 filed with the Town Clerk before October 1 for the basic exemption, and a letter from the Veterans Administration showing the rate of disability for the disabled veteran’s exemption, “a one-time filing, unless the rate of disability changes,” with the maximum benefit at 65 or older regardless of rating. No veteran amounts are printed. The additional exemption section says the veteran “must meet certain income limits set by the state. The income limits are the same as the ‘Homeowners program,’” and prints them: “Veterans whose annual incomes do not exceed $56,500 if married and $46,300 if single,” with the filing period February 1 through October 1 and proof of all income for the preceding calendar year; veteran’s disability income is not considered. For a permanently and totally disabled veteran with a 100 percent service-connected rating the page describes the 12-81(83) exemption, “applications must be filed annually and is due no later than January 1st of each year.” The active-duty section exempts one motor vehicle belonging to, leased to, or held in trust for a member of the armed forces whether garaged inside or outside the state, on an application filed no later than December 31 following the tax due date. OLR’s 2023 survey recorded Bridgewater as offering the 12-81g(b) option, which gives a veteran rated 100 percent disabled, at income limits of $21,000 single and $24,000 married, three times the 12-81(20) exemption in place of the twice under 12-81g(a); the town’s site posts no adoption, and its code page does not resolve. Ask the assessor.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
