The office. The Box Butte County Veterans Service Office is at 524 Box Butte Avenue, Suite D, Alliance, NE 69301, phone (308) 762-4154, [email protected], open Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., closed 12 to 1. The Veterans Service Officer is Sarah Foland, re-appointed on January 7, 2026, with admin assistant Amy Jensen per the State's directory (updated October 26, 2026). What the county lists. County veterans aid (see that entry); a bronze grave flag holder reflecting the veteran's wartime era, which the office inspects every year; registration of DD-214s, after which the veteran "may call us from any where in the world" for a certified copy; homestead help, the office requesting "letters from the VA Regional Office that establish the eligibility of veterans and surviving spouses for tax exemption on their personal residence" and mailing them to the veterans and spouses directly; and grave registration, with a Presidential Memorial Certificate ordered for the family of every deceased county veteran. It also files the State's aid, tuition waiver, discharge replacement, Veterans Home, hunting and fishing permit and licence registry applications and the federal claims, appeals, pensions, education, insurance, burial, home loan, health care and records requests. Two counties. The State's directory lists Ms. Foland and Ms. Jensen as Grant County's officers too, at the Alliance office. The county's filed budget lists the Grant County agreement from May 13, 2025, "until terminated"; Ms. Foland brought its renewal to the Board on April 1, 2026, when the Board asked for a 5 percent personnel increase, and the Board signed Grant County VSO Interlocal Agreement 2026-11 on April 22, 2026. Grant County paid $7,938.00 in 2025-2026, with $7,500 budgeted for 2026-2027. Grant County's side. Grant County's Veterans Services page says "Box Butte County VSO now takes care of Grant County Veterans" and lists Sarah Foland, 308-762-4154, at 524 Box Butte Avenue, Suite D, Alliance, 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.; Grant County keeps no office of its own. Its filed 2025-2026 budget lists the agreement with Box Butte County for Veterans Service Officer services from July 1, 2024 "until terminated" (where Box Butte County's budget dates it May 13, 2025) and pays it as contractual services in its own Veterans Service budget (0100-803): $6,000.00 in 2023-2024, $7,560.00 in 2024-2025 against $9,250.00 budgeted, and $9,250.00 budgeted for 2025-2026. Grant County posts no Board minutes, so its payments cannot be traced claim by claim (see the Grant County aid entry). The Board's year. The Board approved the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs' memorandum of understanding (Agreement 2025-17) on November 5, 2025 and an Operation Green Light proclamation for November 4 to 11, 2026 on October 7, 2026. Ms. Foland brought quotes for repairs to the Slagle building's lift and parking lot on September 23, 2026. The money. The office spent $104,992.41 in 2024-2025 and $101,499.89 in 2025-2026, and the 2026-2027 budget proposes $135,552. The budget carries a Driver line ($3,184.08 spent in 2025-2026 against $15,000 budgeted), fuel, vehicle repair and "Taxi/Panhandle Trails" lines, which point to rides, though the county's page describes none; ask the office. Homestead certification. The Assessor's homestead FAQ, under "How do I qualify as a Disabled Veteran or their Widow?", lists the exemptions for a veteran totally disabled by a non-service-connected illness or accident, each "(annual certification required)", and sends the veteran to the Veterans Service Office first for a physician's form and the office's certification. The application under section 77-3508 is annual, but 77-3508(1)(c) says the medical certification need not be repeated when the condition has not changed, though the assessor may ask for it again (see the Nebraska entries).
