Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

In Botetourt County the Commissioner of the Revenue, Chris T. Booth, at 57 S. Center Drive in Daleville (540-928-2050, option for real estate; fax 540-473-8289), takes the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption. There is no income test. The county's Real Estate page asks for "Real Estate Tax Relief for Veterans with 100% Service-Connected Disability" to be arranged with the Commissioner's office; no application form, documentation list or acreage note is posted online. Acreage. The county's own tax relief for the elderly and disabled covers the qualifying dwelling and land not exceeding two acres (section 23-49 of the county code), so section 58.1-3219.5(C) of the Code of Virginia requires the veteran's exemption to cover two acres as well. Neither the county's page nor its forms say so; a veteran with more than one acre should check the bill and cite subsection C. The same rule carries two acres to a line-of-duty surviving spouse under section 58.1-3219.9(D). What it is worth. The Board of Supervisors adopted the 2026 tax rates on May 26, 2026 (Resolution 26-05-08), unchanged from 2025: real estate at $0.70 per $100 of assessed value, with the next reassessment due in 2028 after the 2024 one. Taxes are billed in September and due November 1; a 2% penalty applies within thirty days of November 5 and 10% thereafter, under section 23-2 of the county code. A veteran rated permanent and total on the basis of individual unemployability qualifies; the county's page does not mention it, and the Department of Veterans Services treats that rating as qualifying.
