The office. The Boone County Veterans' Service Office is in the courthouse, 222 S. 4th Street, Albion, NE 68620, phone 402-395-2905, [email protected], open Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through the lunch hour (the State's directory, updated October 26, 2026, has it closed noon to 12:30). The Veterans' Service Officer is Robert McCurdy Jr., whom the Board re-appointed for 2026 on January 5, 2026 as an at-will employee with yearly evaluations, and who "serves under the direction of the Veterans' Service Committee, appointed by the Board of Commissioners"; the Board also made him the county's ADA coordinator for 2026. The page calls the office "a county agency required by state statute and funded by the County" and lists the county's own benefits as the County Veterans' Aid Fund "to meet immediate emergency financial needs" (see that entry), a flag holder "for placement on the grave of every Veteran buried in Boone County" and help filing the homestead exemption with the Assessor; military discharges are filed, privately, in the County Clerk's office. Greeley County. The officer also answers a Greeley County line (308-428-2925) and, under an interlocal agreement the counties renew each year, gives Greeley County's veterans in-person service once a week; the Board approved the 2026 agreement on January 12, 2026, and on June 15, 2026 noted that Greeley County might share the cost of the office's new $2,047.95 laptop. Greeley County's own records give its side. Its Veterans Services page calls the office the Greeley County Veterans' Service Office, "in Greeley, Nebraska on Wednesdays and in Albion, Nebraska (Boone County) the remaining days of the week": Wednesdays 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Greeley County Courthouse, 101 South Kildare Street, Greeley, NE 68842, and Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Albion. Its page lists the same county benefits as Boone County's: the County Veterans' Aid Fund "to meet immediate emergency financial needs" (see the Greeley County aid entry), a flag holder for the grave of every veteran buried in Greeley County, and help filing the homestead exemption. The Greeley Board approved the 2025 agreement with Boone County on January 28, 2025, effective for the calendar year, after rescinding a December 26, 2024 approval so its wording could be updated, and the 2026 agreement on January 27, 2026, effective January 1 to December 31, 2026, both times recording that Mr. McCurdy would keep Wednesdays in the Greeley office. Greeley County pays the agreement a quarter at a time: "Boone County VSO agreement" claims of $2,405.00 in 2025 (March 11, June 10, September 9 and December 9) and $2,567.50 in 2026 (March 10, June 9 and September 8). Greeley County keeps its own Veteran Service Board, to which the Board re-appointed Allen Babcock (February 11, 2025) and William Berney (January 27, 2026) for four-year terms on Mr. McCurdy's recommendation, and signs its own VetraSpec and Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs memoranda (November 25, 2025, the State's for January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028). Its own Veteran's Service Officer budget (0100-803) spent $8,778.54 in 2023-2024 and $9,380.28 in 2024-2025 and adopts $10,430.00 for 2025-2026, $8,010.00 of it in an officials salary line; on June 23, 2026 the Board moved $100 of budget authority into it to cover the year's spending, and took no action on Mr. McCurdy's request that Boone and Greeley Counties share the cost of a laptop. The Board's year. The Board renewed the Tyler Technologies VetraSpec software agreement ($475.94 a year) and the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs' VetraSpec memorandum for January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028 on November 17, 2025, and evaluated the officer on December 29, 2025. The county's employment application says positions are "subject to a veterans preference" and asks a veteran or qualifying spouse to claim it with a DD-214 (see the Nebraska entries on the preference). Homestead certification. The Assessor's homestead FAQ, under "How do I qualify as a Disabled Veteran or their Widow?", lists the exemptions for a veteran totally disabled by a non-service-connected illness or accident, each "(annual certification required)", and sends the veteran to the Veterans Service Office first for a physician's form and the office's certification. The application under section 77-3508 is annual, but 77-3508(1)(c) says the medical certification need not be repeated when the condition has not changed, though the assessor may ask for it again (see the Nebraska entries). The money. The office (0100-803) spent $24,142.33 in 2023-2024 and $31,891.25 in 2024-2025 and the 2025-2026 budget adopts $53,495.00, the officer's $40,000.00 and $3,000.00 for grave markers and flags among it.
