Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Where the fund came from. A Board resolution of November 25, 2020 (No. 2020-42, filed with the budget) records that the fund began in the 1960s as a Soldiers and Sailors Relief Fund raised by donations, was moved into a separate interest-bearing account in July 2003 as the Veteran's Aid Fund (1900), and had grown on levies and interest to $79,062.54 by October 31, 2020. The resolution keeps the interest account, limits the money to veterans under the veterans statutes, and stops the levy until the fund falls below $4,000.00, when the levy resumes. What it holds and pays. The fund held $75,382.34 on July 1, 2023, paid $4,000.00 in 2023-2024 and $1,500.00 in 2024-2025, and held $76,701.57 on July 1, 2025, earning about $3,400 a year in interest and levying nothing. The 2025-2026 budget makes it all available: $4,000.00 of veterans' aid costs and $72,702.00 of capital outlay lines that carry the balance. The office keeps a "County Veteran's Aid" account that the Board authorizes each September and that balances to zero, and pays aid from it: on October 29, 2025 the Board, denying a general assistance request for a utility bill, sent the applicant to the office's discretionary fund; on March 27, 2026 the officer asked for $2,000.00 from the fund to help with a veteran's funeral, and the Board's April 13, 2026 claims paid $2,000.00 from the Veteran's Aid Fund. Who qualifies. The page lists the County Veterans' Aid Fund "to meet immediate emergency financial needs" and prints no eligibility test. Section 80-102 lets the county veterans service committee aid a veteran, a spouse, a surviving spouse or a minor child in need; since LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) the veteran need only have served, been discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions) or died in service, and lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county. Apply through the Veterans' Service Office, 402-395-2905 (see that entry); see the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the State's own aid fund.
