Bonneville County Assessor: Veterans Property Tax Reduction
The Bonneville County Assessor takes the State's veterans property tax reduction for a 100% service-connected veteran with a homeowner's exemption from January 1 to April 15, with a current VA letter, in person preferred (208-529-1320). Its page still gives the old $1,320 cap and says every recipient must reapply each year; the cap is now $1,500, unemployability qualifies, and a permanent and total rating renews automatically.
Also called: property tax, assessor, 63-705A, property tax reduction, 100% service-connected, April 15, Idaho Falls, $1,500, Veteran Service Officer, Idaho Falls, Ammon, Iona, Ucon, Swan Valley, Ririe.
The reduction is the State's, Idaho Code 63-705A; the Idaho entry explains it. In Bonneville County the Assessor takes the applications (208-529-1320).
What the Assessor's page says. "The Idaho Veterans Property Tax Reduction benefit reduces property taxes for qualified 100% service-connected disabled veterans. If you qualify, the property taxes on your primary home and up to one acre of land may be reduced by as much as $1,320.00. This program doesn't have an income limit." Solid waste, irrigation and other fees are not reduced. The veteran must qualify for the homeowner's exemption (a care facility or nursing home stay can still count) and bring "a current letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs confirming your 100% service-connected disability rating as of January 1st". "You can apply for your veteran's property tax reduction only between January 1st and April 15th"; no extensions. The county sends approved claims to the State Tax Commission for final approval. The office prefers applications in person, but will mail a form on request.
Where the page is out of date. The cap is now $1,500, not $1,320; the State programme also takes a veteran paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability; and while the page says "you must apply and qualify each year. It is not renewed automatically", a veteran with a permanent and total rating no longer has to reapply each year. It also still says the rating must hold "as of January 1, 2019", the programme's first year.
Help applying. The county's Veteran Services, run through the Clerk's office, has a Veteran Service Officer, Kylie Lancaster, and a Veteran Public Outreach Officer, Bob Skinner, who report to the commissioners each quarter; ask the Clerk's office, 605 N Capital Avenue, Idaho Falls, to reach them.
