Berkeley County Auditor: Veteran Exemptions

The Berkeley County Auditor's exemptions page tells a 100% totally and permanently disabled veteran how to reach the State's exemption through the Department of Revenue - on the home and up to one acre - with applications from the Auditor's Office, and describes the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act military exemption for personnel whose home of record is elsewhere.

Also called: property tax, auditor, 12-37-220, DOR, exemption, Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act, homestead, Moncks Corner.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's, under section 12-37-220; the South Carolina entry on it explains the test and the DOR certificate. The Berkeley County Auditor's own exemptions page: "Disability: You may be eligible for exemption of property taxes through the South Carolina Department of Revenue on your home and up to one acre of the land on which the home is located if you are: a 100% totally and permanently disabled veteran, law enforcement officer or firefighter with a service-connected disability. ... An application may be obtained from the Auditor's Office or downloaded here." Beside it: "Military Exemption: The Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act exempts military personnel, whose HOME OF RECORD is somewhere other than the State of South Carolina, from paying Berkeley County Personal Property Taxes..." - the resident-tax mechanism behind section 12-37-250, which the State entry on it describes. The Auditor also takes the ordinary Homestead Exemption ("exempts $50,000 from the value of your legal residence for property tax purposes") for age or disability. Read the date. The county's site answers 403 to every automated fetch, so this entry rests on the Internet Archive's capture of June 16, 2025; the downloaded application is the Auditor's, and the figures are the State's.
