Bannock County Assessor: Property Tax Benefit for Disabled Veterans
The Bannock County Assessor, 130 North 6th Avenue, Pocatello (208-236-7260), takes applications from January 1 to April 15 for the State's property tax benefit for disabled veterans, up to $1,500 off the tax on the home and an acre, for a veteran rated 100% service-connected or paid at 100% for unemployability, with a homeowner's exemption; a permanent and total rating renews it automatically.
Also called: property tax, disabled veteran, $1,500, April 15, homeowner exemption, unemployability, surviving spouse, Assessor, 63-705A, 208-236-7260, Pocatello, Chubbuck, Inkom, McCammon, Lava Hot Springs, Downey, Arimo, Virginia, Swanlake, Fort Hall.
The benefit is the State's (Idaho Code 63-705A; see the Idaho entry).
What the Assessor's page says. "You might qualify for this program if you're an Idaho resident, homeowner, and qualified veteran with a 100% service-connected disability. The program could reduce the property taxes on your home and up to one acre of land by as much as $1,500. Once granted to a qualifying veteran, a surviving spouse can use this benefit. However, the benefit isn't transferable to a new property after the death of the veteran." "The Disabled Veterans benefit doesn't have an income limit." The test: recognition by the VA "with a 100% service-connected disability or receive 100% compensation due to individual unemployability ... as of January 1", owning and living in the Idaho home before April 15, with a current homeowner's exemption; a mobile home counts, and a veteran in a care facility may still qualify.
Applying. "You must apply and qualify for this program every year. You must apply between January 1 and April 15", with a current VA letter; "If your disability is permanent and total, you don't need to reapply each year. The benefit will renew automatically." An approved benefit appears on the December tax bill. The page mixes years: it gives the 2027 test dates beside a 2026 filing window, so use January 1 to April 15 of the year the benefit is for. The benefit does not reduce solid waste, irrigation or other fees.
Help. The Veteran Services office (208-282-4245) runs walk-in clinics from January to April to get the VA letter; file with the Assessor's Office, 130 North 6th Avenue, Pocatello, 208-236-7260, weekdays 8 to 5.
