Augusta County Disabled Veteran Real Estate and Vehicle Tax Exemptions

Augusta County takes the statewide home and one-vehicle exemptions for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent, and total on one in-person application that also asks for a driver’s license and a Veteran ID Card. Its page and form still tie a surviving spouse to the same home.

Also called: property tax, real estate tax, Augusta property tax, car tax, 100% disabled, surviving spouse.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Augusta County's Commissioner of the Revenue, in Verona, takes the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption and the statewide one-vehicle exemption on a single application, which has to be submitted in person. Besides the VA letter showing a disability that is 100% service-connected, permanent, and total, the form asks for a copy of a current driver's license and of a Veterans Identification Card. Neither is in the statute, which asks only for the VA documentation; a veteran without a VA Veteran ID Card should bring the VA letter and ask the office to accept it. There is no income test, and the form says correctly that the veteran refiles only if the principal residence changes. The county's page and form state the surviving spouse rule as it stood before 2019: the spouse qualifies only while he or she "continues to occupy the real estate", and the form prints that condition as part of the law. Section 58.1-3219.5(B) says the exemption "applies without any restriction on the spouse's moving to a different principal place of residence". The page also says the property "must be owned or jointly owned with spouse by the veteran"; section 58.1-3219.5(D) and (E) also reach a life estate, the trusts it lists, and a home co-owned with someone else, with a prorated exemption. For the vehicle, the county's personal property page asks for a car or truck owned by the veteran or the spouse and used primarily by or for the veteran, as section 58.1-3668 says, and states that leased vehicles do not qualify. Augusta has no separate rate for the limb loss and blindness class in section 58.1-3506(A)(19): its taxation chapter creates no such class, and the 2026 rate table has one rate for automobiles, $2.65 per $100 (the same page's text still says $2.60, and $2.00 for business property where the table says $2.15). A veteran with limb loss or blindness rated below 100% pays the ordinary rate.

GateRule
100% permanent and totalAugusta County applies the statewide exemptions to the home and to one owned car or truck. It states the 100% service-connected, permanent, and total rating. It does not add an income test. One path is a VA rating of 100% that is service-connected, permanent, and total.
Permanent and total on the 100% pathThe 100% rating has to be permanent and total. A 100% rating VA has not made permanent does not meet this path.
Individual unemployabilityThe other path is a total disability rating based on individual unemployability that VA has also rated permanent and total.
Permanent and total on the unemployability pathIndividual unemployability qualifies on this path only when VA has rated the disability permanent and total.
