Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Augusta County's Tax Relief for the Elderly and Disabled, section 22-12 of the county code, relieves real estate tax on the home of an owner who is 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled. The page asks a disabled applicant for certification from the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, or the Railroad Retirement Board, or for two Virginia doctors' affidavits. Gross combined income of the owners, relatives, and nonrelatives living in the home cannot exceed $55,000, and net worth cannot exceed $125,000, excluding the home and up to ten acres. Section 22-12, as last amended in April 2024, works relief out as a percentage from both figures: 100%, less an income deduction of nothing up to $25,000, rising to 30 points at $40,000 and 100 points at $55,000, and less a net worth deduction of nothing up to $40,000, rising to 10 points at $75,000 and 100 points at $125,000. An owner with income of $25,000 or less and net worth of $40,000 or less pays no county real estate tax on the home. From January 2025, retirement accounts are valued like pensions and net worth subtracts debts, so the county asks owners who were turned down before to reapply. File every year between January 1 and April 1. It is not a VA rating of 100% service-connected, and a disabled veteran who does not meet that test can use it.
