Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Auburn grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessing Division’s Real Estate Exemptions page lists “Veteran - Clause 22” among its personal exemptions and prints “Exemption Amount - varies with type of veterans’ exemption. Minimum: $400 (most exemptions). Maximum: $1,000.” That range is the statute’s own, clause 22’s $400 to clause 22E’s $1,000, so the figures here are the statute’s; the page names no local option, and no acceptance was found on the town’s site. The page’s residency line still asks that the veteran have lived in Massachusetts six months before entering service or five consecutive years before filing, the wording the statute carried before the HERO Act. The Veteran Services Division page names David Adams the Director of Veteran Services at 508-832-7706, extension 1237, where the EOVS directory lists the same office at 508-832-7706; the town serves from auburnma.gov, where town.auburn.ma.us no longer resolves. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Auburn Veteran Services Division: David Adams, Director of Veteran Services. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
