Ashley County (Arkansas) Collector: Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption

The Ashley County Tax Collector, Lori Pennington, at the courthouse in Hamburg (870-853-2050), takes the State's disabled veteran exemption on the home and personal property; her page still asks for the VA letter every year by October 15, but since Act 876 of 2025 it is a one-time filing.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's, under section 26-3-306, as the Arkansas entry on the disabled veteran property tax exemption explains: no tax on the home, its land and personal property for a veteran VA rates 100% permanent and total or pays special monthly compensation for the loss or loss of use of a limb or blindness, carried on by an unremarried surviving spouse and minor children. Act 876 of 2025 added to section 26-3-306(b) that the VA letter "is required to be submitted only one (1) time" and that "annual submission of a letter from the department is not required", from the 2025 assessment year, so long as you tell the collector if you stop qualifying or move. File again for a new home. The county's page. The Collector's page (edited October 9, 2025) explains the exemption: a veteran, or "an unmarried widow of a veteran", disabled by a service-connected injury and rated permanent and total, or awarded special monthly compensation for the loss or loss of use of limbs or blindness, pays no tax on personal property or the homestead and its contiguous land, though improvement district and clean-up fees still apply. The veteran or widow must be on the personal property assessment and title and the real estate as owner, must bring the Summary of Benefits letter, and cannot also take the Amendment 79 homestead credit or the over-65 freeze; a widow must be receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation. The page still says "each year, the Veteran or surviving spouse must provide a letter ... by October 15th"; under Act 876 of 2025 one letter is enough from the 2025 assessment year, so ask the office to keep the letter on file.
