Where it applies

A veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 50 percent or more as determined by the US Department of Veterans Affairs can apply to qualify for a Veteran Exemption on the primary home on which homestead exemption is claimed. A surviving spouse must occupy and remain the owner of the primary home; the benefit does not apply to a surviving spouse purchasing a new primary home after the veteran's death. The tiers. Effective January 1, 2023, Constitutional Amendment No. 2 (Acts 2022, No. 172), approved by 73 percent of voters, replaced and expanded the veteran property tax exemption into three categories: at 50 to 69 percent, the next $2,500 of assessed value is exempt; at 70 to 99 percent, the next $4,500; at 100 percent, the remaining assessed value is exempt from ad valorem taxation.
