Anderson County Veterans Service Advisory Committee
The Anderson County Veterans' Service Advisory Committee - twelve members: three commissioners, one veteran each from American Legion Post 172, VFW Post 12051, AMVETS Chapter 2 and DAV Chapter 26, four at-large honorably discharged veterans, and the Director ex officio - oversees the Veterans' Services Office, reviews its policy and budget, and helps hire or fire the Director; it meets ten times a year, and its records are the commission packets.
Also called: VSAC, Veterans Service Advisory Committee, Resolution 24-05-1150, Resolution 26-07-1263, by-laws, Tracy Wandell, American Legion Post 172, VFW Post 12051, AMVETS Chapter 2, DAV Chapter 26, Clinton, Oak Ridge, Norris, Lake City, Rocky Top.
The committee is a county creation with its own resolutions. Resolution 24-05-1150, "duly adopted by the Anderson County Board of Commissioners on May 20, 2024, established the Veterans' Services Office and the Veterans' Service Advisory Committee" - the committee itself having first been established on November 20, 2006. Resolution 26-07-1263, adopted July 20, 2026, rewrites its Section 7: members are "appointed by the Anderson County Board of Commissioners and shall serve at the pleasure of said Commission ... to a term of four (4) years which the Commission may extend as needed", and the committee "shall consist of twelve (12) members": three county commissioners; one honorably discharged Anderson County veteran from each of American Legion Post 172, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12051, AMVETS Chapter 2 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 26; four honorably discharged Anderson County veterans at large; and the Director of the Veterans Services Office ex officio. "The Advisory Committee shall assist the Director and staff with policy and budget recommendations and directives concerning the delivery of service to veterans", and "shall assist the Board of Commissioners with the termination and hiring of the Director and any other duties requested by the Board of Commissioners."
How it runs. The commission's chairman in its records is B. Denise Palmer, and Commissioner Tracy Wandell (District 1) has chaired the committee in the year read, with Commissioners Robert McKamey (District 5) and Stephen Verran (District 7) as commissioner members; meetings moved "from Quarterly to 10 times per year" in July 2026. The 2026 minutes carried in the commission packets show the committee's work: the amended by-laws; the Veterans Appreciation Breakfast (the Clinton Lions Club "sponsors a monthly breakfast each year", per a Lions Club resolution the commission adopted, with the committee in 2026 weighing the crowd size against the room); the Veterans Court Mentorship programme ("looking to more Veteran Mentors"); a Women Veteran Outreach Event for August 20-24, 2026 (potential location the Oak Ridge Senior Center; participants the VA, the East Tennessee Women Veterans Association, Helen Ross McNabb, the Vet Center, American Legion, AMVETS, DAV and VFW); a proposed Id.me/Login.gov workshop; a 3M partnership "to support Veterans in need of food, water and supplies throughout the year"; an inquiry about a DAV vehicle "assigned to Anderson County to assist veterans with getting to and from appointments"; appreciation letters to the Legion, DAV, VFW and AMVETS; and the FY27 budget.
The office's budget. The Finance Committee's FY2026-27 fund list carries an "Opioid Veterans Court Funds" category beside the general fund, and the Veterans Service department's presentation sits in the April 15, 2026 budget workshop packet's department pages.
