Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's, AS 29.45.030(e), which Alaska requires every taxing municipality to grant; the Alaska entry on it records what the statute says and the reimbursement the legislature has not appropriated since 1997. In Anchorage the Property Appraisal division of the Department of Finance decides every claim, and its rules for the 2027 tax year are these. Amount. Up to $150,000 of assessed value is exempt for property owned and occupied as the primary residence and permanent place of abode by a disabled veteran. The same exemption extends to a resident at least 60 years old who is the widow or widower of a person who qualified as a disabled veteran. Proof. The Municipality's 2027 Disabled Veteran Exemption application requires a current VA benefits summary letter stating at least a 50 percent service-connected disability, with the discharge date. The applicant must have been a State of Alaska resident for the entire year before January 1 of the exemption year, and each subsequent year the property must be owned and occupied as the primary residence and permanent place of abode for at least 185 days before January 1, with the dwelling not rented or leased to another while the owner is absent. Deadline. Applications must be complete and received in office, submitted online, or postmarked by March 15 of the tax year. It is the property owner's responsibility to ensure receipt by the Municipality. A property owner who received the exemption the prior year with no change in ownership or use need not reapply, and exemptions do not transfer to a newly purchased property without a new application. Owners must notify the assessor of any change in ownership, property use, residency, status of disability or other factor affecting qualification - a duty the Municipality's page grounds in Municipal Code 12.15.015(C)(6). The applicant bears the burden of proof under state statute and the Anchorage Municipal Code. By submitting the application a claimant is automatically also applying for the residential exemption, which supersedes any earlier residential application. Where to file. Municipality of Anchorage Property Appraisal, P.O. Box 196650, Anchorage, AK 99519-6650; in person at 632 West 6th Avenue, Suite 300; email [email protected]; (907) 343-6770. The Assessor may request additional information before deciding, under the Municipal Code and state law. A companion local entry covers the Military Service Widow and Widower Exemption, which Anchorage grants under AS 29.45.050 and AMC 12.15.015(E)(3).
