Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Amherst County applies the statewide one-vehicle exemption - one motor vehicle owned and used primarily by or for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent and total, owned by the veteran or the spouse - through the Commissioner of the Revenue. The county code carries no separate vehicle-classification section of its own, so the constitutional provision and section 58.1-3668 govern; the office's listed duties include administering the veterans' exemptions, and questions go to the Commissioner's office at 434-946-9310. The 2026 personal property rate is $3.45 per $100 per the Commissioner's page (machinery and tools $2.00), with the state's PPTRA relief on qualifying personal-use vehicles set at a 26.40% discount capped at $182.16 for the year. The state's car-tax relief applies to the first $20,000 of a qualifying vehicle's value. A vehicle carrying DMV disabled veteran plates is also free of the county's vehicle license fee - see the vehicle license fee entry.
