Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The rules are the State's; see the Indiana entry on county service officers and free discharge records. IC 10-17-2 has the recorder record an Indiana resident's discharge free and give the veteran a certified copy free, and a recorded discharge is not a public record. How the Recorder handles it. Copies can be requested on the State's website or at the Recorder's office, 1 East Main Street, Room 100, Fort Wayne (260-449-7165; [email protected]; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), with the veteran's name, date of birth if known and branch of service. Those who can ask are the veteran, the county service office, Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs staff, a legal guardian, a licensed attorney, a funeral director, the estate's representative and the veteran's next of kin, each with the identification the State requires. Staff will check whether a record is on file but do not furnish records by phone, email or fax. If nothing is on file, the Recorder sends the applicant to the Veterans Service Office in Room 106 of the same building. The Recorder's page does not mention fees; under IC 10-17-2 recording costs nothing and one certified copy needed for a benefit claim is free.
