Allen County Auditor: Disabled Veteran Deduction and Credits
The Allen County Auditor has updated its page for House Enrolled Act 1210: the 100% homestead deduction needs a new State Form 12662, with Section VIII completed by Veteran Services, filed by January 15, 2027. The page describes the deduction as for a 100% VA rating, where the statute says a total disability, which a VA pension can show.
Also called: property tax, deduction, 100% deduction, House Enrolled Act 1210, HB 1210, State Form 12662, January 15, $350 credit, $250 credit, county auditor, Fort Wayne.
The deduction and credits are the State's; see the Indiana entries on the 100 percent deduction for totally disabled veterans and on the $350 and $250 credits. The Allen County Auditor administers them.
What the page gets right. That House Enrolled Act 1210, signed March 12, 2026, replaced the old deductions; that the 100% deduction on the homestead needs an application and is not applied automatically; that a veteran already receiving a partial disability deduction gets the new credit automatically; that the credits are $350 for a wartime veteran with a service-connected disability of 10% or more and $250 for a veteran 62 or older with a disability of 10% or more; and that State Form 12662 is due in the Auditor's office by January 15, 2027.
Where it narrows or confuses.
- The test. The page says the 100% deduction is for "veterans or surviving spouses with a 100% VA disability rating". IC 6-1.1-12-14 asks for a veteran with "a total disability" shown by a VA pension certificate or award of compensation or an Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs certificate, with 90 days of service, an honorable discharge and a year of Indiana residence; the Department of Local Government Finance says the disability need not be service-connected. A veteran on the VA pension, or paid at the 100% rate through individual unemployability, should apply.
- The deadline. The same page says "You will have until the end of 2026 to apply". The statutory deadline is January 15, 2027 for taxes due in 2027; filing by December 31 is safe, but a January filing is not late.
- Section VIII. The page says Section VIII of the form "must be completed by the Veteran's Service Office". The form also accepts the VA award letter or pension certificate with the DD-214; the County's route through Veteran Services is the easiest way, not the only one.
Anyone who had the old $14,000 deduction must file again, or the Auditor applies only the $250 credit for taxes due in 2027.
