Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The fund is the county relief fund every Michigan county keeps under 1899 PA 214 (MCL 35.21; see the Michigan entry). Allegan pays for it from its general operating levy ("an allocated millage of 5.1619 mills for County operations, which includes the Allocated Veterans Relief fund", in the 2026 appropriation act adopted October 9, 2025) rather than a separate line, and the Board's claims lists pay from it every cycle. Who. "The Veterans Relief Fund can assist Veterans whose income is less than or equal to their expenses, who have at least one day of wartime service (actual combat duty is not a requirement), and any type of discharge other than dishonorable." The applicant shows a DD-214 "showing ACTIVE DUTY with a discharge that is not dishonorable", proof of all household income and expenses, and household income within 200 percent of the poverty level: a maximum monthly household income of $2,660 for a single applicant, $3,606.67 with a spouse or one dependant, $4,553.33 with two dependants, $5,500 with three, $6,446.67 with four, $7,393.33 with five and $8,340 with six. The county's discharge test is wider than the statute's "honorably discharged" and its one-day wartime rule is the State's period-of-war test. What it pays. Rent or mortgage, necessary utilities and heat, food vouchers, personal needs, car repairs and tyres, and car payments, the bills in the veteran's name; not cable or phone bills, credit cards or non-essentials such as air conditioning or remodelling. How. "The Veteran Relief Fund Board meets the first Thursday of each month." Before then, book an interview with a service officer (in person, by phone or video), complete the Budget Worksheet and Checklist, and bring the bills, estimates and proof of income.
