Alexandria Disabled Veteran Vehicle Tax Exemption

Alexandria exempts one passenger car, pickup, or panel truck from personal property tax for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent, and total, or paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability.

Also called: car tax, personal property, vehicle tax, Alexandria car tax.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The city applies the statewide one-vehicle exemption. One passenger car, pickup, or panel truck, registered for personal use and owned and used primarily by or for the veteran, is exempt from the city personal property tax. The veteran has to be rated 100% service-connected, permanent, and total, or paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability with a disability that is permanent and total. The city encourages filing by June 15. There is no hard deadline on the city page. The exemption began January 1, 2021. A vehicle that displays current Virginia disabled-veteran plates is exempt from the city local registration fee. Those plates do not, by themselves, exempt the personal property tax. The tax exemption still requires this program. A veteran who does not meet the 100% permanent and total test can look at the city income-based vehicle relief instead.
