Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

This is how the City of Alexandria applies the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption. The Department of Finance, Revenue Division, takes the application. There is no income test and no asset test. The veteran has to occupy the property as the primary residence. The city may ask for proof of residence, such as a state tax return. The rating has to be permanent and total. A 100% rating qualifies. A rating under 100% also qualifies when VA pays at the 100% rate because of individual unemployability and the disability is permanent and total. A temporary rating does not qualify. A surviving spouse can qualify when the veteran died on or after January 1, 2011, the spouse has not remarried, and the spouse occupies the home as the primary residence. The exemption can start on or after January 1, 2011. Taxes from earlier years are not refunded under this program. The city does not set a larger acreage than the statewide baseline of the dwelling and up to one acre. The city encourages applicants to file so the application is received or postmarked by June 15. There is no hard filing deadline on the city page. Alexandria is an independent city. It is not a county. This entry is the city record on the Virginia county map.
