Alexandria Vehicle Tax Relief for Permanent and Total Disability

Full personal property tax relief on one vehicle assessed under $30,000 for a permanently and totally disabled Alexandria resident under a $20,000 income cap and a $75,000 net-worth cap.

Also called: car tax, vehicle tax, personal property, one vehicle.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The city exempts the personal property tax on one vehicle for a resident who is 65 or older, or permanently and totally disabled, and who meets the income and asset tests. This is not the statewide one-vehicle exemption for a 100% service-connected veteran. The vehicle has to be owned, at least in part, and used by or for the applicant. Leased vehicles do not qualify. The city assessment has to be under $30,000. Only one vehicle per household is relieved. If the household owns more than one, the city applies the relief to the vehicle with the highest assessment, subject to the city guidelines. For 2026, combined gross income of the applicant and spouse for 2025 cannot have exceeded $20,000. Combined net worth as of December 31, 2025 cannot exceed $75,000. That net worth includes vehicles and excludes the principal residence and up to one acre. New applicants need disability certification from Social Security, VA, the Railroad Retirement Board, or two Virginia physicians. File by April 15 on the same application as the real estate relief program.
