Skilled nursing at five state veterans homes for an honorably discharged veteran who has lived in Alabama for the past 12 months and needs that level of care. Assisted living is at the Pell City home.
Also called: nursing home, state veterans home, Tut Fann, Huntsville, skilled nursing, assisted living.
The Department of Veterans Affairs operates five state veterans homes with a private contractor. They are not VA medical centers. The homes are Bill Nichols in Alexander City, Floyd E. "Tut" Fann in Huntsville, William F. Green in Bay Minette, Colonel Robert L. Howard in Pell City, and Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins in Enterprise, which opened in October 2024. Tut Fann, at 2701 Meridian Street in Huntsville, is the home nearest Limestone County. Pell City offers assisted living as well as skilled nursing. The others on the department's pages are skilled nursing.
The Tut Fann eligibility page states the rules for any Alabama state veterans home. The veteran needs an honorable discharge and at least 90 continuous days of active duty, other than active duty for training. Someone who enlisted after September 7, 1980, or was commissioned after October 16, 1981, needs 24 continuous months, or the full period for which the person was called if that period was at least 90 continuous days. The veteran has to meet VA criteria for skilled nursing or for domiciliary care, and has to have lived in Alabama for the immediate past 12 months. A physician has to show that the home can provide the care, that the veteran does not have behavioral traits dangerous to residents or staff, and that a mental-illness diagnosis does not outweigh the medical condition. The home checks the sex-offender registry and felony fugitive status.
Applications come from a county veterans service office, from the department's application, or from the home. The office checks basic eligibility and residency and adds the name to the waiting list. The admissions committee reviews medical information when the name nears the top. A rating is not the admission test on that page.

Honorable discharge and Alabama residency
Admission requires an honorable discharge, the active-duty length on the home page, 12 months of Alabama residency, and a medical need the home can meet. A VA rating is not the admission test.
