Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Department of Veterans Affairs owns the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort, in Baldwin County. The cemetery opened for interments in 2013. It has in-ground graves, columbarium niches, and a scatter garden. The department says eligibility for interment follows National Cemetery Administration requirements. National Guard and Reserve members, spouses, and dependent children can be eligible when they meet those criteria. Confirm eligibility with the cemetery. This entry does not restate the federal cemetery rules as if they were a separate Alabama test. Pre-registration is free and does not reserve a promise of burial. It lets the veteran, and a spouse, establish eligibility in advance. The department asks for the DD Form 214 and, for a married veteran, the marriage certificate. The pre-registration form says VA pays interment fees for an eligible veteran, and that a fee of $375 is collected for an eligible spouse or dependent child at the time of placement. The form in use is the May 2023 version. Ask the cemetery for the current fee. The cemetery office is at 34904 American Patriot Way, Spanish Fort, AL 36527. Phones are (251) 625-1338 and (251) 626-7183. A county veterans service office can help with the paperwork. The department is planning a second state veterans cemetery in north Alabama. It is not open. Spanish Fort is the operating cemetery.
