Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Acushnet grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The town’s Tax Relief for Seniors, Veterans, and the Disabled chart, posted with the Board of Selectmen’s pages, prints $400 under clause 22 (a service-connected disability of 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart, a Gold Star parent, a spouse or surviving spouse), $750 under 22A, $1,250 under 22B and $1,500 under 22C, with full exemption under 22D and 22F. These are the statutory amounts, and the chart names no local option; the same chart prints 37A at $500 and 41C at $500, also the statutes. The chart’s clause 17D line sits at $234.50 for fiscal 2020, above the statute’s $175 and marked “Adjusted annually by CPI”, which a clause 17F acceptance can produce; the chart names no acceptance, so ask the assessors. The Office of Veterans’ Benefits names Bradford Fish the Veterans’ Agent at Town Hall, 122 Main Street (508-998-0207), where the EOVS directory lists the same officer. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Acushnet Office of Veterans’ Benefits: Bradford Fish, Veterans’ Agent. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
