Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Acton grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessor’s Property Tax Relief Programs packet for fiscal 2026 prints “Up to $823.20*” under clause 22, “Up to $1,543.50*” under 22A, “Up to $2,572.50*” under 22B, “Up to $3,087*” under 22C, 100 per cent under 22D, “Up to $2,058*” under 22E and 100 per cent under 22F. Each is its statute doubled and raised by the fiscal 2026 adjustment of 2.9 per cent, what clauses 22I and 22J at 100 per cent produce; the packet names no option, and no town meeting vote was found in the town’s online records, so ask the assessors to confirm. The asterisk leads to the packet’s note that the exemption cannot reduce total taxes paid below the prior year’s total taxes, the section’s own minimum-tax limit. The packet’s eligibility line still asks that veterans have been Massachusetts residents for six months before entering service or one year preceding the current tax year, the wording the statute carried before the HERO Act. The Veteran Services page names James MacRae the Veteran Services Officer at 30 Sudbury Road Rear (978-929-6614), where the EOVS directory lists 978-263-1116. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Acton Veteran Services: James MacRae, Veteran Services Officer. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
