Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Article VII of Chapter 82 of the Accomack County Code imposes an annual vehicle license tax of $27.00 on each motor vehicle required to be licensed ($25.00 on a motorcycle), included on the first tax billing issued in the calendar year (section 82-305, Ord. of 05-19-2021(2)). Section 82-306 exempts any active member of an Accomack County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company on one vehicle or motorcycle. Section 82-307 prorates the license tax on vehicles that move into or out of the county, and section 82-308 makes payment of the vehicle's personal property tax a prerequisite to licensing. The state bar in section 46.2-755(B) of the Code of Virginia (a Commonwealth entry) prohibits a county license fee on the one vehicle of a veteran with Disabled Veteran plates and on the qualifying vehicles of former prisoners of war and Medal of Honor, Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipients, so those veterans owe no Accomack license tax. The county code names no veteran exemption of its own; a veteran who is billed one anyway should ask the Treasurer and cite section 46.2-755(B).
