Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

In Accomack County the Commissioner of the Revenue, Kim Satterwhite, at 23296 Courthouse Avenue, Suite 102, Accomac (757-787-5747 or 757-824-5664), takes the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption under section 82-160 of the county code. There is no income test and no net-worth test. The county's "Real Estate Tax Exemption Application for 100% Disabled Veterans" asks for an original VA benefits certification letter - not a photocopy, with no alterations, issued to the veteran or spouse, dated April 18, 2011 or after - showing the disability to be "(a) 100% service-connected; AND (b) totally and permanently disabled". A surviving spouse also files the veteran's death certificate and a marriage certificate. Acreage. The exemption covers the qualifying dwelling and land not exceeding one acre; the county form computes relief on the "Total Value of Dwelling + 1 Acre". Section 82-160(c) carries the statute's rules for a manufactured home on land the veteran does not own, and for a qualifying improvement such as a carport on the exempt acreage. A surviving spouse keeps the exemption and may move to a different principal residence, as section 82-160(b) states for tax years beginning January 1, 2019. What it is worth. The 2026 real estate rate is $0.486 per $100 of assessed value in every district except Chincoteague at $0.355, with an added $0.014 mosquito-control rate in Greenbackville and Captain's Cove. The Board adopted the calendar 2026 rates with the FY2026-2027 budget on April 8, 2026. Real estate is assessed biennially and billed in two installments due June 5 and December 5; the penalty is 10% of the tax due or $10, whichever is greater, and interest 10% a year. A veteran rated permanent and total on the basis of individual unemployability qualifies; the county's page says a veteran qualifies with "a compensation rating of 100% due to individual unemployability".
