Accomack County Tax Payment Extension for Deployed Service Members

Accomack County automatically extends real property tax on a primary residence and personal property tax on a qualifying vehicle of a service member deployed outside the United States to 90 days after the deployment ends, with no penalty or interest running in the meantime.

Also called: deployment, deployed, tax extension, penalty, active duty, National Guard, 58.1-3523.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Section 82-6(a) of the Accomack County Code provides "an automatic extension on real property taxes upon a primary residence and personal property taxes imposed upon a qualifying vehicle, as defined in Code of Virginia § 58.1-3523, owed by members of the armed services of the United States deployed outside of the United States". The extension ends and the taxes fall due 90 days following the completion of the deployment, so no 10% penalty under section 82-4 or 10% interest under section 82-5 runs while the member is away. A qualifying vehicle under section 58.1-3523 is one registered to the service member and normally garaged outside the deployment area. Section 82-6(b) also lets the Board of Supervisors grant extensions of up to 90 days for other taxes on good cause. A deployed service member or family member should tell the Treasurer so the bill is held.
